Zero-carbon homes to be built in Wigan
17/12/2007
A former coalfield site in west Manchester is set to become a zero-carbon housing development.
Bickershaw in Wigan has been chosen to pioneer zero carbon homes as part of the Carbon Challenge run by English Partnerships.
Some 650 new eco-friendly homes will be built on the colliery, which is currently owned by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).
Peter White, NWDA executive director, said the fact that Wigan has been chosen was proof that the region is "leading the way" when it comes to tackling climate change.
"This is a major project for the area which will create new jobs and leisure facilities, as well as creating a significant number of new homes," he added.
Manchester City Council said it intends to make the city one of the UK's 'greenest' locations and hopes to achieve this by supporting the creation of eco-friendly commercial properties.
