Writer's house on road to recovery
11/11/2008
The house where a famous novelist penned classics and received visits from celebrity authors needs a multi-million pound upgrade.
Elizabeth Gaskell's house in Plymouth Grove in Ardwick must have work to the roof, walls and drains to restore the building to its Grade II-listed Regency-style splendour.
Owner Manchester Historic Buildings Trust is working with the city council and English Heritage to raise £2.5 million for the work, which has just received planning permission.
Trust head Janet Allan said: "We have enough money to fund some of the first phrase and are in the process of raising the rest of the £2.5 million that is required."
Elizabeth Gaskell wrote Cranford and Wives and Daughters in the house she lived in between 1850 and 1865.
During that time she received visits from authors Charles Dickens and Charlotte Bronte, of whom she wrote a biography.
The Ardwick house remained in her family until 1913 and still retains a lot of its traditional features.
Once restored it could be used for community events, exhibitions and meetings.
