Sustainable housing to be built in Monton?
02/07/2007
The site of a former engineering works on Canal Bank in Monton could be home to a range of environmentally-friendly houses.
Featuring wind turbines and rainwater harvesting facilities, the houses will be built on the site of the Mitchell Shackleton factory, which closed in 2001.
Chester Developments have submitted revised plans to Salford City Council, after failing to get permission last year, reports the Salford Advertiser.
"In its current state, this derelict site offers nothing to the surrounding areas and the local community," chairman Anthony Hirsch told the newspaper.
"We believe [
] that this scheme could potentially be on one of the most exciting sustainable and environmentally-friendly communities in the UK."
The £100 million estate will be built using local materials and local labour, in order to cut down the development's carbon footprint.
This is the second time in the past fortnight that developers have promised to build eco-houses in Manchester.
Urban regeneration company New East Manchester has said that environmentally-sustainable housing and a wildflower meadow will be created in Clayton's Ashton Canal district.
