Support pledged for Manchester key workers
07/01/2008
Nurses, teachers and other key workers are to be provided with support to help them onto the housing ladder in Greater Manchester.
A low-cost homeownership scheme is now available, which until now was only available in the southeast. It means key workers could potentially buy a house worth as much as £200,000.
The government has also said that more new affordable housing is needed and has pledged over £800 million to alleviate the short supply.
Housing minister Yvette Cooper said: "Over the last ten years we have helped 80,000 families to buy an affordable home.
"We want to make it easier for nurses, teachers and other first-time buyers to get support and are building more thousands more homes over the long-term."
Manchester City Council was recently asked by the ministers to establish local housing companies in partnership with private developers in order to build more affordable houses.
