Sir Richard welcomes momentum at Maine Road
17/01/2008
The Maine Road property development has helped establish "real momentum" for housing improvements and choice in Moss Side, according to the leader of Manchester City Council.
Announcing the development of new sites in Moss Side, Sir Richard Leese said there is now the opportunity to "broaden the market".
Hundreds of family homes are being built at Maine Road and the council has just purchased the Stagecoach Bus Depot, which has prevented further housing development in the area.
"We now have a unique opportunity to further broaden the housing market, stabilising communities by ensuring that people's housing needs can be met within the area, and we are determined to seize it," said Sir Richard.
The council has pledged to protect the war memorial which is located near the abandoned bus depot.
Maine Road, which was demolished in 2004, was Manchester City Football Club's home between 1923 and 2003. The club has since moved to the new City of Manchester Stadium, which was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
