Salford enjoys property boom
23/11/2007
More homes were built in Salford last year than in any other time in the past two decades, with more than 2,200 houses and apartments constructed last year, new figures have shown.
The most commonly built new homes are apartments, which are especially popular in central Salford, where the city rubs should shoulders with Manchester.
Some 90 per cent of Salford's new-builds were built on brownfield sites, which is 30 per cent higher than the government's recommended level.
Councillor Derek Antrobus said: "These latest statistics show developers are continuing to show great confidence in Salford and its housing market, helping change the perceptions of the city.
"Fewer people are leaving Salford and more people are coming in and making it their home, halting the long-term decline in population that we've seen over the past few decades."
The city council wants a fifth of all new homes to be affordable so that first-time buyers and key workers can get onto the property ladder.
Salford was recently described as the fifth most desired address for middle-class househunters looking for an affordable home.
A Royal Bank of Scotland survey found that the city has affordable houses, successful schools, good restaurants and cultural attractions.
