Residents 'want more allotment space'

A growing number of residents in Manchester are applying to the borough councils for allotment space so that they can grow their own produce, new research has shown.
As more and more people are prepared to eat organic food for health and ethical reasons, many Mancunians want access to their own piece of land, especially if they live in an apartment without a garden, according to a survey for National Allotments Week.
Councils are bound by law to provide a sufficient amount of allotment space and to rent them out to local people.
Martin Oldham, chairman of the Greater Manchester Allotments Society said the desire to have an allotment is now "very trendy".
He told the Salford Advertiser: "For the past three years allotments have been let as soon as they become available.
"Manchester City Council doesn't spend a lot on allotments. It has 40 sites and the total capital spend is just £10,000."
The boroughs with the most allotments are the City of Manchester, Trafford and Tameside.
National Allotment Week's aims are to promote the social and health benefits of allotment gardening, and to encourage councils to put aside more green space.
