New urban village to be built in Openshaw

18/04/2008

More than 1,000 new homes are to be on a 44-acre site in Openshaw on the east side of the city.

Harrow Estates has received planning permission from the city council to build 1,100 homes aimed primarily at families.

As well as homes, commercial property and shops will be built in the new urban area.

The Manchester property development will be known as Dreyfus Village, after French entrepreneur industrialist Charles Dreyfus who established the Clayton Aniline Company on the site.

Mike Riding, managing director for Harrow Estates, said: "This is an important step in the regeneration of east Manchester.

"The combination of homes, offices and community facilities is just what the area needs."

Urban regeneration company New East Manchester is supporting the scheme and has commissioned architects Taylor Young to design the masterplan. Construction is expected to start in 2010.

Last month, a plan to build 1,200 new houses and apartments in west Gorton was given the green light by the city council.

The proposal includes the creation of new shops, a medical centre, a primary school and a community park with sporting facilities.
