Massive investment for west Salford homes
15/08/2007
Council homes in west Salford are to receive £930 million of investment, it has been announced.
Tenants have overwhelmingly voted in favour of transferring their homes from the ownership of the city council to a new social landlord, which will carry out improvements to 14,500 homes.
City West Housing Trust, a non-profit body, will now manage homes located in Eccles, Barton, Pendlebury, Clifton, Little Hulton, Walkden, Worsley, Irlam and Cadishead.
Councillor Peter Connor, lead member for housing, said: "Tenants have secured millions of pounds of investment for their homes and communities that will result in the largest programme of improvement in social housing ever seen in Salford.
"It will not only benefit them, but their children and their children's children."
Over £604 million will be spent on the homes over the next three decades and some of the money will be spent on improved housing for the elderly and those with disabilities.
A recent report by the council stated that £205 million needs to be spent over the next five years to improve homes in west Salford.
