Manchester pushes ahead with green building plans

Manchester City Council has said it intends to make the city one of the 'greenest' locations in Britain and hopes to achieve this by encouraging eco-friendly commercial properties.
In one instance, the roof of the new five-storey BDP Architects, Engineers and Designers office in Piccadilly Basin has been designed to house rare black redstart birds, which recently arrived in the city.
The so-called 'living roof' is part of wider initiative to meet green building standards in existing and new properties.
Richard Lewis, development director for Town Centre Securities said: "The redstart birds are a rare species with only around 100 breeding pairs in the UK.
"When we found out there was a population on our doorstep we wanted to play our part in protecting and enhancing their population."
The property investment firm said it is committed to helping Manchester reach its aim to become the greenest city in Britain.
David Cash, BDP's regional chairman, said the building represents the firm's commitment to Manchester and the "rapidly regenerating" Piccadilly Basin area.
Other buildings in Manchester with bird-friendly roofs are Unicorn, a vegan grocery in Chorlton and a new range of properties in New Islington.
