16/04/2009
A historical property in Manchester has been awarded a grant for repairs, it has emerged.
The grade II-listed home of Cranford author Elizabeth Gaskell is to receive £262,000 from English Heritage in order to cover the cost of urgent renovation, the BBC reports.
Located in Plymouth Grove, the property was constructed in the 1830s and was the location where Gaskell wrote most of her novels between 1850 and her death in 1865.
The money from English Heritage will help to pay for repairs to the roof, rotten windows and cracked walls, as well as removing the dry rot which is affecting the building.
Patron of the trust Dame Judi Dench said: "I am delighted that English Heritage is offering a grant to carry out the work that is needed on Elizabeth Gaskell's house.
"This is a major historical building and it will be wonderful to see it restored to its former glory."
A non-departmental public body, English Heritage aims to manage the historical built environment of England.
