Manchester loses out in eco-towns contest

07/04/2008

Trafford and Wigan have had their applications to build eco-towns turned down by the government.

Both boroughs had been among 57 suggested sites for Gordon Brown's proposed eco-towns but in the end no schemes in Greater Manchester have been shortlisted.

Housing minister Caroline Flint said: "Some really innovative green ideas have been proposed - from free public transport for all residents to using the waste heat from nearby power stations to heat homes and businesses.

"I have already rejected more than 40 proposals and those promoting eco-town schemes cannot rest on their laurels."

However, plans to build an eco-friendly housing development in east Manchester were recently given the go-ahead by the city council.

Homebuilder Gleeson is currently building Gorton Monastery Village, a 4.7-acre development next door to the famous monastery.

All homes will boast energy saving appliances, cycle and bin storage and will have high-quality insulation to trap heat in the winter.
