Interest rate and housing expert to visit Manchester
17/05/2007
Kate Barker, a member of the Bank of England's interest rate-setting body the monetary policy committee (MPC), is visiting Manchester later this month to discuss issues surrounding housing.
Ms Barker, who recently authored the Barker Review of Housing, will give a lecture at the University of Salford on May 22nd to celebrate the launch of Salford Business School.
As well as house price inflation, she will discuss government policy, the environmental impact of building more homes and possible solutions to the problem of "unaffordable" housing.
John Wilson, head of the business school, said: "Salford is renowned for its relevant, real world teaching in business and management and that is strengthened by our strong links with key industry figures such as Kate."
Last week, the MPC voted to raise interest rates to 5.5 per cent – its highest rate in over six years. It means many households in Greater Manchester and elsewhere will have to pay higher mortgage bills every month.
