Green light for affordable homes initiative
06/11/2007
Manchester has been given the go ahead by the government to build affordable houses for key workers and first-time buyers.
Housing minister Yvette Cooper said that Manchester City Council can offer deals to key workers and first-time buyers who buy new homes at selected developments.
Manchester is one of 14 authorities that has been given the green light to set up local housing companies to deal with the lack of affordable homes.
Ms Cooper said: "We urgently need to build more homes for first-time buyers and families.
"This is a new way to help councils to do their bit to support new homes for key workers and families in their areas."
Under the new arrangement, Manchester council will be able to sell land to private developers but will continue to exert a strong influence on the nature and direction of housing projects.
Last week, the council said that all planning applications for new developments that comprise more than 15 homes must include a provision for affordable homes.
Developers that do not make such provisions will be refused planning permission, the council asserted.
