'Green' housing development for east Manchester

An eco-friendly housing development is to be built in Clayton's Ashton Canal district by New City Vision, according to urban regeneration company New East Manchester.

Work on the homes will begin in the autumn and the environmentally-sustainable scheme will eventually consist of 196 two and three-bedroom apartments and 211 two, three and four-bedroom houses.

At the heart of the development will be an eco-park, with a wildflower meadow and canalside walkway, designed to improve the area's bio-diversity and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Commenting on the developer's choice of building materials, chief executive Tom Russell said: "There was a strong preference to use of brick, large windows and flexibility of design, which has been achieved.

"The designs also incorporate pleasingly high environmental standards meaning the properties will have the benefits and comfort of a modern, energy-efficient, cost-effective home."

New East Manchester is a partnership initiative between Manchester City Council, English Partnerships and the North West Development Agency.

Other major Manchester property projects managed by partnership include the £250 million New Islington development in Ancoats.
