First-time buyers 'attracted to northern cities'

High property prices in the south are making the north an attractive place for first-time buyers, according to a spokesperson for Buy Association.

Homes and property editor Kate Hamilton said that cities in the north such as Manchester offer similar job opportunities as London, but property prices are much cheaper.

She said that a growing number of people are buying property in the north and letting them out to tenants in order to make some extra cash.

"That way they're on the property ladder – they just don't happen to be on the property ladder in the area where they live themselves," Ms Hamilton remarked.

"There's certainly a case for a lot of people to be moving north, especially to the big cities like Manchester and Leeds where there are the job opportunities but where property is much cheaper," she added.

According to the Land Registry, annual house price inflation in Greater Manchester grew by 7.4 per cent in February, bringing the average property price to £123,761.
