Fire deaths in Manchester properties 'decrease'
22/04/2009
The number of fatalities caused by fires in Manchester properties has fallen to a record low, new figures suggest.
According to the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), there has been a reduction in such deaths of 39 per cent over the last year.
This is said to be the lowest figure recorded by the service since it was established in 1974.
In 2008, 11 people lost their lives as a result of accidental fires in their homes in Greater Manchester.
Over the previous 12-month period, a total of 18 people died in such circumstances.
Since April 2004, GMFRS has fitted more than 200,000 free smoke alarms in a bid to cut down on fatalities caused by domestic blazes.
County fire officer Barry Dixon commented: "Even a single death in an accidental fire is one too many."
Covering an area of around 500 square miles, GMFRS employs over 2,500 members of staff and serves a population of 2.5 million.
