Council to build cutting-edge tower block for the elderly

Manchester city council has been granted more than £6.5 million to transform an empty tower block into a housing complex for older people.
Whitebeck Court in Charlestown will be turned into 92 apartments with a sky lounge and a rooftop jacuzzi.
The money was awarded by the department of health's extra care fund.
Communal facilities will include a day centre, restaurant, hairdressers, assisted bathing facilities, shop, communal lounges and an IT suite.
Councillor Basil Curley said the investment puts Manchester "at the forefront of valuing older people".
He added: "It will give them the freedom to be independent whilst having top quality facilities to enjoy."
A total grant of £80 million has been made available by the department of health to provide funding for the development of housing for those who need care.
