Blears welcomes housing initiative
08/11/2007
Salford MP and communities secretary Hazel Blears has welcomed plans to build new homes and eco-towns.
The government's Queen's Speech revealed the prime minister's intention to establish an agency that will combine land and investment for new homes.
It was revealed that dozens of local authorities in the north have applied to become special housing growth areas.
Ms Blears said: "This government is facing up to the big challenges that we face as a nation - climate change, globalisation, energy security and demographic change.
"The bills announced today will help us achieve this by delivering a better planning system for infrastructure and better homes."
In recent days, Manchester City Council has pledged to build new affordable homes in partnership with private developers.
Manchester is one of 14 authorities that have been given the go-ahead to create local housing companies in order to address the issue of affordability.
