BBC to buy homes for relocated workers
10/01/2008
The BBC has introduced a homebuying scheme for workers relocating from London to west Manchester.
A firm called Cartus will administer the BBC's pledge to provide relocation deals to all workers as the corporation prepares to move several departments to the mediacity:uk site at Salford Quays.
The BBC has said it will buy homes for 1,500 staff at cost of £16.5 million, while employees at all levels will be offered a relocation package worth about £5,000 each.
A spokesman for the BBC said: "We think this passes the value for money test. We would be living in another land if we thought people would move at their own expense."
As well as raising the international profile of Salford, west Manchester property prices are expected to climb.
Property firm Prospect recently said that estate agents in west Manchester are preparing for an influx of TV personalities looking for a place to live so they can be close to the BBC.
