2,500 homes to be built in new urban quarter
01/02/2008
The creation of a new city centre for Salford will result in 2,500 new homes, it has been announced.
Known as Exchange Greengate, the new urban centre will be built on the Salford side of the Irwell that runs past Manchester Cathedral. The two cities will share a new public square and bridge.
The announcement of £8.5 million funding from English Partnerships also means 4,000 jobs.
Paul Spooner, English Partnerships spokesman, said: "Our funding is critical to unlocking the regeneration potential of the area and in reconnecting Salford and Manchester through a vibrant public space area.
"One of English Partnerships' key aims is to achieve high-quality, well-designed, sustainable places for people to live, work and enjoy and Greengate certainly hits the mark."
In addition, over 85,000 sq m of commercial floor space will be created at Salford's new urban centre.
The final draft of the planning guidance for Exchange Greengate was approved by Salford City Council in January 2007.
