West Gorton homes given the go-ahead
13/03/2008
Plans to refurbish 250 existing homes and build 1,200 new houses and apartments in west Gorton have been given the green light by the executive board of Manchester city council.
The proposals also include a medical centre, new shops, a primary school and a community park with sports facilities.
Architects BDP designed the new community in conjunction with regeneration agency New East Manchester and development consortium BASE, a joint venture between Artisan and Barratt.
Councillor Eddy Newman said: "Urban renewal is not just about up-grading housing.
"This initiative is part of a comprehensive regeneration of the area that will create a sustainable community with a range of new amenities that will improve the lives of local people."
The west Gorton masterplan has been examined twice by members of the public, who have repeatedly expressed the need for new family homes, better public spaces and a retail centre.
