Stockport 'has shortage of affordable homes'
27/11/2008
There are not enough affordable houses in the Stockport area, according to a council organisation.
Stockport Homes, which is currently developing new properties in the Brinnington area, said there are now 9,000 people on the town's housing register.
Helen McHale, chief executive of the organisation, said this has come about because there is a shortage of cheap housing in the region.
She commented: "This is exacerbated by high house prices in the borough and only very small numbers of new affordable houses becoming available."
The remarks came after Stockport Homes received £1 million in funding from the Housing Corporation.
Steve Douglas, chief executive of the organisation, said Stockport Homes can help overcome the region's housing problems by getting them onto the property ladder or into rented accommodation.
"The challenge for Stockport now is to deliver," he added.
According to the Land Registry, the average price of property in England and Wales is now £168, 814.
