More people will live alone in future
01/10/2008
More singletons and older people will make up the future housing market of Manchester and Salford, according to policymakers.
According to a blueprint by Communities and Local Government, more residents will live alone over the next 13 years.
To meet the projected increase in demand for homes, the authorities have recommended the creation of 23,111 new houses a year.
This is projected to increase to 25,600 until 2026 as the amount of solo inhabitants increases.
Communities minister Baroness Kay Andrews said: "We have an ageing population with more people choosing to live alone and new households are growing faster than new homes."
If more homes were not built soon the housing ladder would be even more out of reach, she added.
According to the National Housing Federation, the waiting list for social houses has risen 75 per cent in the north-west over the last five years.
Manchester and Salford were the top priorities in the northwest for new homes alongside Liverpool.
