Manchester and Salford buildings shortlisted for architect awards

20/03/2008

More than half a dozen building schemes in Manchester and Salford have been shortlisted for this year's Royal Institute of British Architects awards.

In total, eight buildings from the two cities have been put forward, the most famous of which are the Civil Justice Centre on Bridge Street, and John Rylands Library and Beetham Tower, both on Deansgate.

Last month, the Queen unveiled a plaque at the official launch of the £145 million justice centre.

At the opening, justice minister Jack Straw said the building is part of the wider regeneration of Manchester and gives "its people a court with a stunning design and superb facilities of which they can be proud".

Another strong contender for the awards is Salford's Chimney Pot Park, built by Urban Splash, which comprises homes that have been built "upside down".

All the bedrooms in this development are located on the lower floor, thereby freeing up space for the living quarters, according to the developer.

The winners of the award's various categories will be announced on Wednesday May 28th.
