Council orders £600,000 home to be demolished
10/07/2008
A house in Stockport is being pulled down brick by brick after the borough council ruled it was two-feet too high.
Built by tradesman Stephen Woodfinden-Lewis at a cost of £600,000, the house has been at the centre of a four-year legal battle
The council ordered that the house, which is situated in the leafy suburb of Woodford, be altered or demolished. Mr Woodfinden-Lewis decided on the latter, although he intends to rebuild it.
Stockport council claim the house was much bigger than the original plan had suggested and was out of keeping with the local area.
Councillor Chris Baker said: "Mr Woodfinden-Lewis chose to ignore the approved plans and built a house which was completely inappropriate in this location."
Last year, the government paid £450,000 for a Victorian terraced house in Manchester and then had it knocked down to make way for a modern housing development.
